Welcome

The Association was incorporated on 9th August 1990 by a group of women who saw the need for collegiality and support for female legal practitioners. 

Aims of the CWLA

The aims of the CWLA as set out in its Constitution are: 

  1. To facilitate and encourage contact and mutual support amongst members
  2. To work for the advancement of women in the practice and study of law,
  3. To work for the reform of the law and its administration, and for the advancement of social policy, particularly as it affects women and children,
  4. To promote the use of women’s skills in law,
  5. To participate as a body in matters of interest to the legal profession including liaison with the Canterbury District Law Society from time to time as appropriate,
  6. To work for and promote the establishment of organisations with similar objects throughout New Zealand and to affiliate with such organisations,
  7. To affiliate with and maintain connections with national and international organisations with similar objects,
  8. To do all such other things as are incidental or conducive to the attachment of the objects herein,
  9. Such other objects as the Canterbury Women’s Legal Association shall in general meeting decide.

Members of the CWLA

There are three types of members of the CWLA:

  • Ordinary:  any woman who agrees with the objects of the CWLA and who has been admitted to practice as Barristers and Solicitors of the High Court of New Zealand and/or holds a degree in law from a university in New Zealand or other such institution as the Committee may prescribe.
  • Associate: any woman who agrees with the objects of the CWLA and who is either enrolled in a university within New Zealand who is proceeding to a degree in law or is a Legal Executive with a current registration from the New Zealand Institute of Legal Executives.
  • Honorary: this membership may be conferred by the Committee on any person in recognition of meritorious work in any field, or on any visiting woman lawyer.

Members receive invitations to all CWLA events and discounts on the ticket price to attend those events.
