Be inspired and empowered

The programme for the 2017 CWLA Professional Women’s Conference on Thursday 24 August 2017 at the Rydges Latimer Square has been finalised and the Conference brochures are now available!  As with the previous four years, there is a wonderful range of speakers and the CWLA hopes to see you there.

This year, the Conference will be chaired by Kathryn Dalziel.  Kathryn Dalziel is a well-known partner of the boutique law firm Taylor Shaw in Christchurch.  Kathryn specialises in employment and privacy law as well as civil litigation and professional ethics.  She lectures in Legal Ethics at the University of Canterbury and is on a New Zealand Law Society Standards Committee as well as the New Zealand Law Society Human Rights and Privacy Committee.

Hon. Justice Christine French will open the Conference.  Justice French was the first South Island woman to be appointed to the High Court, being appointed to the Christchurch registry in 2008.   In 2012, she was appointed to the Court of Appeal and in 2014 awarded an honorary doctorate of law by Otago University.

Our other speakers are:

Annah Stretton Founder and CEO of the Stretton Fashion Group, Annah Stretton is highly regarded as a successful entrepreneur, philanthropist, author, and public speaker.  Annah will speak about her philanthrophic ventures and in particular RAW (Reclaim Another Woman) where Annah has targeted highly recidivist female (and now male) offenders from inside the country’s prisons, and enabled real life change through relocation away from previous disruptive influencers and environments, incubated living and education scholarships.

Annah has matched significant others (mentors) with women who had been subjected to domestic violence, crime, drugs and poverty. The mentors essentially guide and support the RAW women into a journey of education, which RAW locates and negotiates for the women.

Lizzie Marvelly Lizzie is a musician, writer and activist from New Zealand. The winner of two Canon Media Awards this year for her work as an opinion columnist and blogger, she was also named as a finalist in the 2016 New Zealand Women of Influence Awards, and was awarded an Auckland Local Hero Medal in 2016.  You may have also recently seen her as a judge in the TVNZ series “The Naked Choir”.

While Lizzie has performed around the world, she has more recently become known as a tireless advocate for young women. In 2015, Lizzie founded the award-winning Villainesse.com, an online media project aiming to create smart, ‘no-filter’ media for young women. Lizzie was motivated to create Villainesse because she wanted to hear more young female voices represented in the media. Later that year, Lizzie launched Villainesse’s first major campaign, the globally successful #MyBodyMyTerms. Aiming to spark conversation about victim-blaming, revenge porn, consent and sexual violence, the #MyBodyMyTerms videos have been viewed over 500,000 times, and received press attention from the Huffington Post, Daily Mail, Buzzfeed US, Cosmopolitan US, Bustle, and the New Zealand Herald, among many others.

Stacey Shortall  A litigation partner at the MinterEllisonRuddWatts law firm, a passionate advocate for the wellbeing of women and children, and a mother of four, Stacey is the founder of the WHO DID YOU HELP TODAY™ social movement which seeks to encourage us all to help each other more.

Stacey has been recognised as a Blake Leader, Women of Influence Award winner, Kiwibank Local Hero recipient and was Law Fuel's 2015 NZ Lawyer of the Year for her work with women and children. In New Zealand, this work has included the development of a weekly homework club, as well as a prison programme to help jailed mothers maintain meaningful connections with their children.

Metiria Turei Co-leader of the New Zealand Green Party, Metiria will speak about “Doing what’s right – not what’s easy”.  Raised in a working class Māori family in Palmerston North, Metiria’s parents were “always generous, no matter how sparse the resources”.  After becoming a single Mum at 22, Metiria realised she needed a career that would set her up well to care for her daughter.  Using a training incentive allowance, she put herself through law school, graduating in 1999 from Auckland University and going on to work as a commercial lawyer.

She joined the Greens in 2000, then entered Parliament in 2002.  In 2009 she became Green Party Co-leader, a task she initially approached with trepidation – “you don’t know how you’re going to lead until you’re doing it”.

Gemma McCaw will speak in our health and well-being slot.  Gemma has been a member of the Women’s Black Sticks hockey team for the last 9 years, playing 241 test caps and has competed at three Olympic Games, (Beijing, London and Rio) and is also a dual Commonwealth Games medalist.

Gemma is passionate about helping people achieve their health, fitness and wellbeing goals as well as reach their potential in all areas of life. With a degree in Sport and Exercise Science, Gemma co- founded the 100% Project with Maree Bowden and John Quinn, working with individuals and groups on all areas of wellbeing helping people lead happier and healthier lives. The 100% Project is dedicated to the research and practice of sustained peak performance.

With the help of our sponsors Buddle Findlay (Platinum), Kendons (Gold), Baldwins (Gold),  Anthony Harper (Silver), Chapman Tripp (Silver), Anderson Lloyd (Silver), and Harmans (Silver), we hope to see you all there at our Conference in August.  As always we look forward to hearing all our speakers on the day and for the 5th year in a row hosting another successful yet accessible conference in Christchurch.
